More Garden Activities

- Built two small(ish) raised beds (2m x 1m x 20cm)
- Put together one higher raised bed (2m x 60cm x 90cm)
- Moved two tons of bark-chip to cover the rest of the veg patch (and some of the chicken run)
So another productive day. The new version of the veg patch is pretty much complete now, with the exception of actually planting stuff. That’s most likely the work next weekend (as well as filling the new raised beds with earth, so that’ll be another ton of dirt moved) and then we’ll be done.
There’s still other stuff to do, of course – but the new version of the veg patch has been one of the big jobs on the list for this year, so it’s good to be nearly done with it.
Mind you, we’re both knackered now.
Garden Organisation

Yes, I know, getting scarily organised. We’re going to be doing a lot of work in there during ’08, so we need to have a plan.
There’s going to be a fair amount of veg growing, for sure – we’ve already bought sweet and chilli peppers, sweetcorn, onions, garlic, as well as a couple of others, and we’ve still got some other stuff to buy – as well as generally sorting out more of the layout, getting rid of some (most) of the roses, putting in some more structure, and putting in a decking area around the already-existing pergola thingy.
So we’re starting to plan what’s going to be done when, and how, and why. And by who, of course.
It’s a bit odd to be planning some of the stuff for 2008 already, but there’s going to be so much going on at the time, it’s going to be better to know beforehand what we’re up to, rather than getting to Saturday morning and wondering what needs doing next…
The Good Life
Posted: Wed 4 July, 2007 Filed under: Domestic, Getting Organised, House Work, Plots & Green Stuff Leave a comment »Thankfully, it’s not just me who’s ended up taking on too much work this year – Herself did much the same thing.
Because of the time delays in the house purchase, a lot of the plants that had been started off at the old place either didn’t make it into the ground in time to be useful this year, or everything went in at once (particularly with regard to the stuff in the veg patch) so we’ve ended up letting a lot of it go over. Not intentionally, but just with so much other stuff going on, the veg patch ended up coming last on the list.
As a result, we spent some of last weekend just pulling up a lot of the stuff that’d gone over, or even died, and sticking it on the compost heaps. It’s a bit sad to see stuff just going on the heap, but in this case it was the only valid option. And I suppose it’ll have the side effect of making for decent compost for the new year.
And at least we know for sure that the ground there is fertile and decent, which means that next year we’ll be able to get a lot of decent stuff done. We’ll spend a bit more time planning it though, and hopefully by then we’ll have a fair amount more disposable time where we can do the garden stuff, rather than trying to mix it in with all the house work, moving, painting, tiling, work co-ordination and the like.
