Misconceptions
Posted: Fri 5 December, 2008 Filed under: Cynicism, Weirdness 3 Comments »In the last couple of weeks, two common misconceptions have been thrust into my brain. They both drive me potty, but I’m also interested in finding out from whence they came.
First is a spelling one – for some fuckforsaken reason, some people seem to think that Edinburgh is actually spelled Endinburgh . No idea why. But it comes up with a fair number of results in Google. (That’s changed since last time this one came up – at that point there were a lot of students in “Endinburgh University” as well, which is pretty scary)
Second is a really common one – people thinking that the USA consists of fifty-two states. I’d love to know where this one emanates from, as the US has had 50 states since 1959, and none have been added in the intervening 49 years…
Well, my own “52” was an inexplicable, post-midnight slip of the finger rather than a misconception. Thanks for pointing out the typo, though.
State 51 = Europe.
State 52 = the rest of the world.

Simple.
Ive met a few people that spell it Edinborough
