F/O

Gallows Corner F/O closed [date]
The date’s irrelevant, but that “F/O” has had me befuddled each time. What the fuck is an F/O ?
I found out today (they’d finally put in the full text on one warning sign) so I know what it is.
But can you work it out? I’d be interested to know whether it’s just me being a twat, or whether it really relied on local knowledge…
[Updated : OK, it looks like it was just me being a twat, as the first two commenters both got it right. F/O somehow equates to ‘Flyover’.]
I’m guessing “flyover” (but why it was abbreviated to “F/O” is beyond me).
I do find local roadworks/diversion signs annoying, though. If I’m driving through an unfamiliar burgh and see a sign saying “Abc Street closed at junction with Xyz Road” I have no way of knowing whether or not that affects me – until it’s too late, of course.
Because of my necessary screen resolution, I can’t get to access the comments button now it’s on the RHS of the post until the posts clear the bottom of the sidebar.
So, I’m replying here to today’s Gallows Corner… it’s ‘flyover’, and yes, I suppose it would depend on local knowledge (or passive consumption of radio/TV travel info).
Given the mess the F/O creates most days, I think the sign typist was spot-on. Or had a sense of humour.
re. the comments link, I’m a bit befuddled – even on an 800×600, I can still see the link text (admittedly not all of it) at the bottom of each post, including this one.
I’ll have a look at the css stuff for this again – I’ve faffed with it so many times now that the entire thing’s quite horrendous- and see what I can do, though.
Looks like I need to think about the site redesign, though. Mind you, with things like that I don’t know, I’ll have a think about it.
I do use 800 x 600 on the main PC monitor, and I also take another few pixels off the RHS of the screen with a toolbar. If you just moved the button to the LHS rather than the RHS, it would be perfect.
Alternatively, I’ll only comment when I’m using the laptop, like now. You may think that is a good thing 😉
There you go – a slightly different fix in that it’s now just indenting the link by 50 pixels, but that should do it for you. 🙂
It does, thanks 🙂
