Out of interest, how impressed/despairing/sarcastic should I be when I discover that a company has hired a ‘webmaster’ who turns out to have absolutely no knowledge of HTML or CSS ?
And should I then take on any web-related work through that company?
Wow… And I thought our hiring was bad! (And it is, but not quite that much.)
Accepting work from them might be worth a shot, the first time at least. After all, a clueless client isn’t always a bad thing. Usually though.
Not very impressed/very despairing/your usual sarcastic self.
That’s totally unbelievable though. What does he knwo, Flash? Brilliant. I’d love to see that website. Not.
Should you take work from them? If the opportunity might present itself to inform them that their webmaster is a clueless buffoon who knows next to nothing about web development, then yes. If you couldn’t be arsed, then I’d have to say no.
Their skillset? Um, hmm, let me think.
Ah – yes – they’re great at writing reports, and ‘putting processes into place’. So they look great in the mind of the company. Other than that? *shrug*
RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!!!!
Whats HTML and CSS ??? Whats a webmaster ???
On a serious note, I used to run a Mobile phone shop, but had no idea how mobile phones work or what each mobile phone did. I did however know how to deal with staff/goods in/banking/customer service.
Is it essential as a webmaster to know these things?? I dont think it is, as you would probably have employees to do that stuff for you.
Small organisation, one subordinate to webmaster who is leaving, hence the potential for work.
Using your analogy, Chris, yes, to sell the mobile phones with no knowledge of what makes them work is fine. However, in this instance it’d be more like having a technician for the mobile phones who didn’t know what a handset was or how to use it, and the same for SMS. I.e. “quite scary”
If thats the case, then you would not really want to work for him at all.
Depends on what the webmaster’s rôle is. If it’s to have responsibility for what goes online and to (micro)manage the person who actually does the coding then it just might work. Does seem odd in such a small team, though. I wonder why the current incumbent is leaving …
