Missed Opportunities

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve missed the chance of taking some photos that would’ve been beautiful. Needless to say, this is invariably bloody annoying.

To me, there are two main problems – first is that I’m sat on the train, and the windows are invariably disgusting, which would probably add some gunk and nastiness to the final image. But the second problem is simply that the SLR isn’t the right tool for the job. As with Problem One, I’m sat on a train, and I don’t want to be sat there advertising the fact I’ve got £1,500 of gear with me – along with the corollary of ‘if he’s got that camera there, what else is in the bag?’.

I love the SLR, it’s a fantastic bit of kit, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. But I’m coming to the conclusion that I do need to have a small extra camera, one that I can carry everywhere, with a decent resolution, excellent zoom, but small and compact enough that it never leaves my bag/pocket – oh, and doesn’t look like I’m some well-off bastard.

It’s a pain in the arse – and I’d like to start earning some money from the photos in order to balance out some of the costs…

  1. My Ixus (before the accident) went with me everywhere and although it was only 3MP the photos – depending on the subject – blew up nicely to A3.

I had high hopes for my Kodak V610. Let’s just leave it there, shall we?

If you want to borrow the V610 for a week to see if you get on with it better than I have, Lyle, you know where I am.

Ah, I always liked the look of the V610, but wouldn’t touch it with a shitty stick due to it being Kodak. I’ve known three people with Kodak digicams, and they’ve all been shockingly bad and unusable.

I’ve got a couple being currently considered, just need to look at them properly – ideally in a shop. T’internet ain’t perfect for everything…

I’d rate the Canon A series as excellent creative compacts. I have the A620 which, even though I’ve now FINALLY got a DSLR, still use regularly because it’s such a good camera – very good quality, lots of features and still lots of manual control. Macro mode is excellent. Size isn’t as compact as the Ixus, but you get far more manual control (which, if you’re used to an SLR, you’ll probably want) and afair was cheaper than the equivalent Ixus by megapixels.

The only downside I would say it has is that the flash isn’t as great as it could be. I believe they’re now up to an A640 now in that series?
