Beyond Me
Posted: Thu 1 September, 2005 Filed under: Thoughts 2 Comments »I find stories such as the one yesterday of the woman who jumped in front of a 100mph train with her two children very hard to understand. I don’t have any particular problem with people killing themselves – I have my own beliefs on the subject, obviously, but at the end of the day I don’t have some huge ethical/moral issue with suicide.
However, I do have a problem with those who take other people with them – whether it’s their children, or simply people around them.
If you want to kill yourself, fine – personally I’ve decided it’s a chicken-shit way out, but I can understand when some people don’t believe there’s any other way out. My own experiences show that there are ways out of pretty much any situation – you “just” have to be prepared to do the work to get out. Suicide is seen as a last resort, but in my eyes it’s more about an easier way to stop all the hurt instead of doing the hard work to stop it.
But if you’re going to kill yourself, just kill yourself. Not other people, particularly those too young to have a say in it. That’s just selfish and – frankly – scummy.
I didn’t even get around to the judgement aspect of this story. I was just moved to tears. Whatever the reasons behind it, it’s heartbreaking.
Suicide ‘is a chickenshit way out’ and an ‘easier way to stop all the hurt.’ Can’t agree with you. I can’t begin to imagine what depths of despair a person has to plumb for them to consider taking their own life so what state of mind must the young woman have been in to take her two young children with her? I can feel only pity for her, the kids and any family she may have.
