Huge Egg

This is what we got yesterday. Apologies for the ropy photo, it was done quickly on the mobile rather than using a proper camera.
I’m sure it’s a double-yolker, but all the same, that’s one impressive egg…
[Updated 13/4/10 : Forgot to say, it was a double-yolker, and we haven’t had any more since. I’m hoping it was a rarity rather than the death-knell mentioned by a couple of commenters]
I hate to tell you this, but… on the 4 occasions in the past 14 years that we’ve had huge eggs like this, we’ve had a dead hen shortly afterwards. Sort of a parting gift I’ve always felt. Sometimes they go on laying them for days…
Fair enough – thanks for the warning. Let’s hope that’s not the case.
My Mum and Dad have kept hens for as long as I remember, and this is usually a sign of a soon-to-be-dead hen (as Blue Witch says), or that the hen will not be laying eggs for much longer. It’s a sign of the hen going through the menopause, or something.
