Insulated Cavities
Posted: Tue 5 August, 2008 Filed under: Domestic, Green, House Work 2 Comments »Today we’ve been getting cavity-wall insulation sorted.
For whatever reason, the previous occupants never bothered with it, so it was something that needed to be done and as a result we got a quote from the HEAT project for doing the cavity-wall, and upgrading the loft insulation.
Theoretically, today was the day for getting both things done, but a small incident with Herself (of which more later) meant that we’ve put off the loft insulation upgrade for a while, but still got the cavity-wall stuff done.
It’s taken a couple of hours, and been bloody noisy, but at least the job’s done now. And once the loft’s upgraded as well, the house should be much warmer (or at least lose a lot less heat) than it did last winter. It’ll be interesting to see what difference it makes, anyway.
Filling the cavity walls has made a huge difference for us. I was very reluctant because of all the ‘damp crossing the barrier’ scare stuff around (I blogged it at the time, a couple of years ago now), but, not only is the house now warmer in winter, but it’s also cooler in summer.
Do ensure that they send you the certificate for the 25 year guarantee as I’ve found that many companies are really bad at this (unless you have it already) – I suspect because they have to pay for the insurance on it and not sending certificates = saving a few quid in premiums if they can get away with it.
Yep, we’ll be chasing up the certificate ASAP – particularly now that it’s needed for as and when we decide to sell the place, with the joy of HIPs. (Assuming the HIPs are still in place when we get round to selling, of course)
