AVG Updates

For the first time since I installed it, AVG Antivirus is beginning to annoy me.

In general, it’s a fantastic product, and the updates run quickly and easily.

However, for some reason this week every single fucking update is requiring that I restart the laptop. And it’s insisting on it in the middle of a piece of work, which makes it even more fucking annoying.

Hopefully it’ll stop this shit soon, or I’m going to be looking at replacing it.

i use zonealarm pro quite good easy to use and never had aproblem with the softwear. I used to use norton which was okay but it tends to slow your pc down but i would highly recomend zonealarm pro

  2. I’ve been having problems with AVG for a while. In my case it was one update refusing to complete combined with the computer hanging 23 minutes into its daily virus scan.

If your daily scan’s not run yet, you have been warned!

  3. There’s an option hidden away on Tools –> Advanced settings –> Update which forces the system to “Require confirmation to close running applications”. You’ll then get a yes/no option regarding restart, which you can refuse. It’s still damned annoying, but it does stop this pointless daily nannying hijack.

Last year I purchased! Steganos AV because it used Kaspersky. When I renewed a few months ago it changed to AVG.

Are you using the latest version (V8)? I have the old version on one machine and the new on the other. It’s only the new one that is being a pain.

They keep extending the ‘no further updates’ on the old version for some reason – it was originally May, but it’s still updating daily, without problems!

Moral: if it ain’t broke, don’t download the latest version just because it *is* the latest version.

    Nope, I’m still using 7.5 .

Actually I think it’s the other way round!

Which would totally make sense… they’re trying to make people upgrade – and the new version has an annoying ‘link scanner’ incorporated into it that tells you which links on a Google seach are OK and which contain trojan geegees (and delays the search return coming back by a couple of seconds on my less than 1MB but as good as you can get here slow connection). You can disable just this bit, but it then puts an red ‘error state’ exclamation mark over the AVG icon in the bottombar. Which probably won’t annoy anyone but me!

  8. Lyle says:

Yeah, the link scanner had a lot of bad press – it wasn’t just doing Google checks, but was actually going off and loading the pages of other linked sites, thus exploding their bandwidth bills – but I had heard that they’d changed it to stop this from happening.

I may upgrade to 8 if 7.5 keeps annoying me – it won’t cost me anything extra, as I’ve already bought a licence, and can just upgrade the install, which isn’t too bad.
