Up ’til now I’ve been able to resist such a thing. Firstly because I didn’t drive (’til eighteen months ago, give or take) and then because, well, I still didn’t need one of my own. If I did need one of my own for anything (like going away for the weekend, say) I hired one.
But now, it’s (hopefully) coming close to the time when we move to the new place, out in the arse-end of nowhere. No, not Norfolk – we’re there already. But this is more ‘arse-end of nowhere, even for Norfolk’, which is a pretty scary concept in itself.
But that also means that yes, it’s time to buy a car. So I’m off to see and test-drive a couple I’ve got my eye on over the weekend, and we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, well, be afraid. Be very afraid…
Remember to factor in running costs.
Yes, I can afford to buy a BMW, but that would leave me unable to buy any new tyres, or an exhaust etc etc..
My only comment, would be to also factor in things like fuels costs and road tax. For example I could happily afford and run somrthing like a vectra or a passat, yet I choose to use a Corsa. Why.. There is only ever one person in the car at a time, the MPG performance is fantastic, road tax and insurance is low. The missus however who only ever does short journeys with 2 or more kids and assorted paraphenalia like swimming bags and bikes uses a Galaxy.
Oh, absolutely – I’m taking into account all that sort of crap, and making sure it’s affordable.
As for buying a BMW, Gordon, just well, WHY? You always seem like a decent guy – why make everything think you’re an utter cunt? 🙂
You’ve never driven a BMW, have you Lyle?
Just don’t buy anything French for heaven’s sake.
No, Jann, I haven’t. As per the earlier comment, I’ve never had the desire while driving to make everyone think I’m a fuckwit bastard with no regard for things like other road users, road signs, or those funny little blinky lights on the corners of the car.
Mind you, with the latter point I suspect that BMW just deactivate them as a default setting. The bloody things’re never used…
Lyle with his own car i am scared already, the time i’ve known the old chap i’ve never thought of him driving or yet owning a car
