Sounding the Alarm – Additional

Following on from here, Gert made a comment saying, effectively, that I could use my phone as an alarm.

And yes, I could – and indeed I do while I’m away- but I prefer to have a stand-alone device to work purely as an alarm clock. And there’s one very good reason for this, which I re-discovered this morning. It’s pretty simple, but still very relevant.

If the phone is on silent (and even more so if it’s on ‘silent mode, but not vibrate’) then the alarm effectively doesn’t go off. It’s muted.

And I have a habit of muting my phone while either a) at work or b) in a restaurant, and then forgetting it’s been muted, so the alarm doesn’t work the following morning.

And that is why I don’t use my phone a lot as an alarm. Because I’m a fuckin’ numpty.

Wow, my phone still sounds the alarm when the silent feature is turned on. Also, If I turn the phone off, it will turn it’s self on and sounds the alarm. Very useful when power is low and you’re stuck in India and you forgot to pack the charger!! Note to self: pack charger for trip next week!

Yeah, I thought mine would too. But turns out, I was wrong.

If I’d set the sound option to vibrate, or even the proper “off” then it probably would, but it has another option, where sound is “on” but no volume – which is where I’d set it. And that doesn’t make any noise at all. Annoying, but then, that’s exactly what the setting says it does, so *shrug*. Hey Ho.
