Strop

Now, be honest, is there anyone who didn’t fall about laughing when watching Wayne Rooney’s strop at the England/Sweden game?

Yes, even I saw it, and laughed.

UPDATED : Yes, I admit it, I watched the match. Herself had it on, and I couldn’t be arsed to move. So yes, I watched it.

I happened to see that, only by having News 24 on. And it only goes to prove that most footballers – particularly the prima donna league ones – are overpaid overinflated windbag kickers.

I didn’t fall about laughing, in fact the opposite, the lad was frustrated with his performance and annoyed he’d been substituted. He is one of the few England players who puts his heart and soul into the game and it shows. Why does everyone knock ppl who represent our country?????? that’s the bit of the world cup I’m sick of!

  3. Jann says:

Overpaid and overinflated, certainly. But you’ve missed the point by a country mile as Andy above points out. He was justifiably furious with the drop in effort by the team and at the fact that he’s not as fit as he thinks he is yet.

Having said that, it was amusing to see but for completely different reasons.

I can understand being frustrated by lack of fitness – fine. As for the drop in effort by the team, they got complacent – but to say that he was one of the few players to put heart and soul in is (to my uneducated eye) utter bollocks.

The one who scored the first goal was more impressive, and more consistently in there, as was whats-his-face who ended up with a yellow card.

I’m not knocking people who “represent our country” – I just found the strop exceptionally funny, as did the commentators, who couldn’t stop giggling, and commented “it’s like he’s just been called in for his tea”

Ask any footy pundit, watch any other match, they will all tell you Rooney is the only one who doesn’t stop running, doesn’t stop trying, that’s why he inspires the England team, my opinion still stands – Lyle, I’ve been watching this kid for years, I’ve seen him play before he became famous – he’s the only one that will flog his guts out in any match. Ppl in this country would rather laugh at their own than back them. Like you said Lyle, in terms of football, ur not an expert, but I’ve watched it all my life and played it for most of it, until I got injured and couldn’t play anymore, kinda understand his frustration!

I think more than anything, the point about us ‘laughing at our own’ is best shown when the same commentators point out that other players are ‘furious because they’ve been substituted’ and leave it at that. In all the other matches that have been played, waterbottles and kit have been kicked all over the place and no-one says anything.

  7. Jann says:

But it was funny when one of the commentators (think it was Ian Wright Wright Wright) said “it’s like he’s just been called in for his tea”, wasn’t it?

  8. Andy says:

Wrighty is a cheeky monkey, ya can’t help but love the guy, ok coulda been phrased slightly better, but ya know what I mean …….. and I suppose it was funny.

  9. Andy says:

I’m still standing up for the Roonmeister tho!!!! :d
