Look, Media Industry, it’s no shock that the new Home Secretary has no idea how many illegal immigrants are in the country.

See, the clue is in the title. They’re bloody well illegal. So they’re not going to call up the Home Office (or anywhere else, for that matter) and say

Oh, hello, you don’t know me, but I’ve just snuck into the country on the back of a truck, and I know you keep a count of all the people like me, so I’d just like to put a tick in that box. Yes,I’m illegal. But add me to the tally. I’m sure you won’t do anything about it.

It’d be far more newsworthy if someone said “Yes, we know exactly how many illegal immigrants are in the country, and we know every unregistered person”.
