Masterchef?
Posted: Wed 22 March, 2006 Filed under: Thoughts 5 Comments »Out of interest, is there anyone who thinks that the guy who won MasterChef actually deserved to do so, above the other two?
(On doing some further reading, I notice that the BBC has even had to explain their decision on the website)
Short-Term Memory…. Um?
Posted: Wed 22 March, 2006 Filed under: Thoughts, Weirdness Leave a comment »On occasion, I’m beginning to worry about my short-term memory.
A few times now I’ve been looking at a webpage, and thinking “Oh yeah, I need to go there, haven’t looked at that in a while”, I open a new tab in the web browser, and then *blank* can I remember what I was just thinking? Can I hell.
I’m sure there was something else I was going to say here…. *grin*
“Royal” Visitations
Posted: Wed 22 March, 2006 Filed under: Sweary, Thoughts 2 Comments »Yesterday, Wokingham had a visit from the Countess of Wessex, or “Sophie thingy” as she’s known. One of the more useless royals, along with her husband.
Anyway, in order to “protect” her from the “crowds” (To whit, no-one. Not a fucking one. No-one cared, or was likely to. And it was only the local Lions she was visiting anyway – hey, talk about high-powered. *cough*) the entourage consisted of :
- One Chauffer-driven Audi A6
- Two Close-Protection Bunch Range Rovers with two plods in each
- Five plods on motorbikes and
- another six all propping up the walls of the town hall
All for absolutely sod-all. SIXTEEN bloody people to protect one minor minor royal on a day-trip to a meeting with a bunch of local Lions Club members. I believe this could be filed under “Overkill”.
How good to see my council tax money going to such good use. *cough*
Navigation Revisited
Posted: Wed 22 March, 2006 Filed under: D4D™ 3 Comments »Following on from the post last week (if not the week before, but I can’t be arsed to check) about “mystery navigation” etc., I’ve decided that for the moment I’ll make the navigation stuff more visible.
I don’t know if it’ll make any real differences – I suspect not, after all this time – but I figure I might as well at least have a look and see how we do with a bit more “user friendliness”…
Akismet
Posted: Tue 21 March, 2006 Filed under: D4D™ 4 Comments »In the continuing fight against comment spam, I’ve installed a new (well, new to me, anyway) plug-in on WordPress called Akismet. It’s been recommended by various people, so I thought I’d give it a thrash as there’s been an amount of stuff that SpamKarma was letting through, and it’s also been flagging up certain people (mainly Gordon and Pix (oops, and Tom – sorry!)) as spam-commenters, which of course they’re not.
So I’ll see how it goes – I’m sure a report will follow…

I’m working on it, honest.
In the meantime, you may want to click here and change the colour-scheme to Worksafe for the moment… Sorry for the fuck-up – I don’t know what’s caused it.
UPDATED : Ah, fixed it. Yay me. I’d screwed up some stuff, but all is resurrected to normality again now. *Makes note to do a complete back-up*
Asking For It
Posted: Tue 21 March, 2006 Filed under: Cynicism, Security, Thinking About..., Weirdness 1 Comment »In today’s “local” news on the BBC, it appears that police are warning drivers not to leave sat-nav units in their cars when unattended. To me, this really isn’t rocket science. Apparently to a lot of people it is.
When I walk anywhere, I tend to notice what’s in cars. I don’t know why – I guess I’m just nosy, really – but I do pay attention. And it’s quite amazing the number of people who do leave expensive stuff out on view when they’ve parked up. Now yes, maybe it is “only for a couple of minutes” – although a lot are at least overnight – but still, you’ve got to be pretty bloody dumb to leave the sat-nav in it’s cradle, with only a window to “protect” it. Same applies for the people who strong leave their phones in their cars, and even their wallets.
All in all, the “don’t leave valuables in the car” message has now been circulating for at least a decade, if not two. As we carry more and more valuable stuff around with us, it would seem sensible to be more aware, but instead people seem to still make use of the “It’ll never happen to me” mentality that drives me utterly bananas.
So far as I’m concerned, if you leave valuable stuff like sat-nav, mobiles, money, cameras etc. visible in the car – and a lot of people do – then you should be prepared to lose it. And of course if you’ve been a numpty and left it there visible, the insurance won’t pay out for it either – in fact, it’s like a tax for idiots. Works for me…
