Subscribing

One idea that was suggested over the weekend in Norfolk was that d4d™ should have a section (or, indeed, an entirely seperate site) that was passworded, and possibly also needed a subscription-type effort in order to get the password. This subscription would be something probably paltry (Maybe £10 per year, or something) more to show willing than anything else.

Content would most likely be far more ranty stuff, sweary, and generally things slanderous, libellous, and not meant for general consumption.

So – what do you think? Would it work? Would you read it?

Should there be a seperate “subscription only” site?
Yes
No
Don’t Care, and wouldn’t read it anyway.
Don’t Care, but might read it on occasion
You sell-out bastard. What a shit idea. What the fuck makes you think anyone would pay for this crap?

I’ve opted for the last option, even though I don’t think your site is crap. To me, having some sort of password or secret area works if you want to publish things only for friends or family, or regular readers. I won’t pay for subscriptions to newspapers, and I certainly won’t pay for subscriptions to anyone’s blogs. I would just take it as a message that my readership isn’t wanted and I’d de-blogroll them. Nothing personal, but that is how I feel.

Not taken to be personal, Gert, don’t worry. I wanted to know what the reaction was – it was a suggestion I was given, so I thought I’d see what other people thought in return.

    Hence the poll… 🙂

  3. Jann says:

Aye, to clarify my vote (the last one) I agree with Gert.

  4. I voted the last one because I wanted to call you a sell out bastard!

  5. Simon says:

Yep, last one for me too, although this place certainly isn’t crap. I’ve been online since 1999 and so far managed not to pay for anything. I do like the idea of secret areas though, sounds very interesting.

  6. anni says:

I tried to vote the last one, but got ‘page not available’. But then my connection is crap.

  7. MrTeacher says:

Politeness has forced me to vote NO.

  8. David says:

Surely, if you did implement a password-only section, someone being bothered to request the password would be enough to show willing. If you’re going to charge what you consider to be a paltry amount, then don’t charge anything.

Besides, I don’t think charging for access to something libellous is any sort of legal defence if the target finds it and decides to sue [just ask Ian Hislop, Private Eye isn’t free!]. 😉

How about putting in more fun things, as well as ur ideas and possibly donating all of the money to charity, kinda does some good then. Btw, i’m not for or against the idea, basically undecided.
