Co-proxamol
Posted: Mon 31 January, 2005 Filed under: Health 868 Comments »Interesting to see today that the painkiller co-proxamol is to be scrapped. Apparently it’s been linked with up to 400 deaths per year and a study found it was the second biggest method of drug-related suicide in the UK, accounting for almost one in five deaths.
I’ve used co-proxamol before, and I can see why it’s easy to overdose on, either intentionally or accidentally. It’s a seriously heavy gun in the world of painkillers, and while it’s sad to see something so effective be withdrawn from the market, I can understand the reasons why it’s necessary to do so.
How will i know if my coproxamol has been confiscated at customs….can anyone tell me please ?as i sent away 2 weeks ago ,to a offshore pharma…i have not received them …..Anne
cant we get a pressure group going ….why should people like us have to suffer ,because of some bloody idiots ..who want to end it…Anne
Hello Anne, you would expect to get a letter from customs approx 3weeks after you placed your order. I have been waiting for same item as you for 4weeks, but nothing heard from customs. This has not been a problem until the last few weeks. Offshore-pharma will reship after 3 weeks. I suspect some of
these orders may not be reaching the uk. I will update. let me know what happens to your order problem.
Thanks Chris …i will let you know ANNE
Hi Chris ..if you happen to read this ..got an e mail from Pharmo ,they said my order had sent out fortnight ago …..do i believe them mmm i wonder ….
Email was from Jane…is this the same Jane as above lol lol..
Hi Anne, Have ordered many times from offshore-pharma since late 2006, and apart from 1 confiscation in 2006 with customs letter, they have always delivered even when customs opened some they still sent it on to me. There is a problem now, i cannot believe customs are picking up all these orders. I am missing 2 orders now. I will have to email offshore pharma soon to try and get some info. Keep me posted, hope yours come through.
Thanks Chris do i have to re-order …and pay again ,sorry i dont know much about this
Hi Chris ..my order arrived this morning ..hope yours did too, would it be possible for you to answer my question ? as above ……well ,for future reference ….thanks Chris
Hi Anne.Pleased to see you have received your order,i must be just unlucky at the momement. If you have to wait 21 days or more, e-mail them they will do free reship. For an alternative site check out Pharma2u.com for distalgesic, nice to talk to you. chris.
Thanks Chris for being so helpful…
HI ANNE DID IT HAVE A CUSTOMS TICKET ON THE PACKET? BECAUSE THEY CAN ONLY HOLD THEM THEY CANT TAKE IT AWAY COS THEY ARE LEGAL JUST NOT IN THE UK PROFESSION.
Hi Marco …no nothing to suggest customs had them ,Cypus stamp and Airmail stamp were the only things on the package ….
Hi Anne,I noted from your comments to Marko that your order came from Cyprus, this must mean it came from Pharma 2u. When you wrote about offshore Pharma i thought you meant Offshore-pharma.com. So back to your question it is Offshore.com which will do a reship. Pharma2u say they need to have the product returned if undelivered. Just to let you Know and Marko, i have received 1 order from Pharma.com today, but not the one from Jan. No Customs interference on this one.
Oh how stupid of me Chris i thought they were the same pharma .dah…lol. good to here you got your order……Chris i would like to know more about the other ,offshore-pharma..how do you find them compared to Pharma2u ?….thanks Chris
Hi Anne, From my experience it is just the waiting time 9-21 days as they ship from Parkistan. But they will do a free reship. I use Pharma2u as back up but will stop if i have a total loss, at the moment i might do more from pharma2u it looks more reliable from Cyprus. Good luck, Chris
Thanks Chris..
Hi Marko and Anne, Just to let you know I received an order today that had been checked by customs then released to me, just as you had expected marko. So it does appear not to be an issue at the moment.
Hi Chris, thats great you finally got your order …do you think there could be problems in the future Chris ?was your order from Offshore or Pharma ?….
Hi Chris ,me again lol ,how do you find the coproxomal from Ofshore ,compared to Pharma ?….
Hi again Anne, seems like just you and me left on here. This order came from Offshore, and really not any difference between Offshore ( they go under the name Darvin) or Pharma. Maybe problems for the future if these are made a controlled drug, not sure about this though. I think you will be an expert on these matters soon lol. Chris
Hi Chris ,its such a shame we have to send abroad for meds that should be available to us …you begin to feel like a criminal ,the thing is i can go down to my local Pharmacy ,and stand beside folks who are on methadone …and thats OK…but dare i ask for a pain killer …i get the third degree , oh its such an unfair world …and the tax payer foots the bill …say no more
hi anne and chris from next wk co proxamol will be sent from uk through p2u rather than cyprus so it will take a day to arrive all the best
Hi marco, Thats good to know, thanks for that.
Hi Marco and Chris ,thats good to know …i have sent for my second order …perhalps a little early ,but better safe than sorry …..Thanks Marco
no worries hope it helps.
Hi Folks 🙂
I’ve never posted on here before, just read some comments.
I, like the rest of us am cheesed off at the wthdrawal of co-proxamol 🙁
I have now ordered from Pharma2u 4 times without any problems. Each order takes 8 days to arrive, which I suppose isn’t too bad but like everyone I do grudge every penny for a very cheaply made painkiller 🙁
Really just wanted to introduce my self and say Hi 🙂 as we are all in the same frustrated position.
Is that correct that as from next week Pharma2u will ship from UK ?
Oh…………………….. Did anyone see this following info I wll attach, at least it prob means we will be able to syill get co-prox ok ?
I take it this will be pharma2u’s lot from uk ?
Press Releases
05.12.2007 / Generic Industry News
Co-proxamol ‘to be supplied unlicensed’The manufacturer of one brand of co-proxamol has announced that it intends to continue supplying the drug unlicensed in 2008, following the cancellation of marketing authorisations for the product by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
The body announced in early 2005 that it was advising the removal of the drugs from the market as the risks involved in its use outweighed the advantages.
However, a phased approach was adopted in the withdrawal to allow patients using the substance to be prescribed alternatives.
Now, Meda has stated that its own brand of the substance, Distalgesic, will continue to be made available through its supplier, Clinigen.
The Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee states that co-proxamol tablets will remain in part VIII of the drug tariff, at a price based upon that of the Meda version, from January 2008.
However, pharmacists can elect to any product meeting the generic description if the product is prescribed generically and will be reimbursed at the price detailed in part VIII.
Meda focuses on marketing and market-adapted product development
Earlier this autumn the firm announced the acquisition of Nordic pharmaceuticals firm Recip AB.
Firstly thankyou to our D4D host. The D4D hospitality is all the more welcome and impressive as it has led to access to online medication, without which several jobs would have been lost and yours truly would have to go back on disability benefit. Pat on the back D4D your blog site is making a material difference to the lives of a lot of people in such a positive way, you have to be commended for hosting this thread. Thankyou.
As for the Medicine & Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) whose “Named Patient” safety net for Coproxamol prescription after their 31/12/2002 ban. Well the MHRA has clearly failed and their “Named Patient” safety system has been shunned by many doctors.
So after lengthy consultation with our lawyer: analysis of remedies available, including direct litigation against the MHRA, or persuing the Judicial Review approach of the MHRA decision to ban Coproxamol because the MHRA have failed to protect those patients whose ONLY effective medication was Coproxamol? Well both these are costly, both in terms of money and limited health from chronic untreated pain induced disability are not really goers just now.
So for those amongst the D4D “Coproxamol Community” who are frustrated and disgusted with the MHRA, the avenue currently being persued is prompted by the General Medical Council investigation and striking off the Medical Register of Sir Roy Meadows. This time the GMC are having a formal complaint against MHRA chairman Sir Alasdair Breckenridge. Given the quasi legal way this will go, comment needs to be circumspect. Suffice it to say that all is not over, for the Coproxamol Community, the rotund lady has yet to sing her last song, and those without any effective analgesia may care to see what happened to Sir Alasdair Breckenridge’s fellow knight of the Realm….

HiAndrea and Russ…..welcome ,i have found this site very helpful ,especialy Chris and Marco..i have read your above article and found them interesting ….
Hi Andrea, Anne and myself got the info from Marko regarding quicker del from P2u, they are saying on their site that branded products will ship from the uk, and generic from their world wide pharmacy, i expect one of us will find out soon enough. It certainly is an expensive item, i managed to get a couple of orders from Australia early 2006, their Coprox (CAPADEX) £42 with del for 500.Then it was made a Controlled drug and the pharmacy could not ship it.

Buy Co proxamol here!
Cheaper elsewere.
Hi Chris, how are you ..ok i hope, well still waiting for my order ,sent for it on the 9th perhalps a little early for me to start moaning …..
Hi Anne, I’m good at the moment anne, thanks, hope you are ok. I think you are a little bit early in your expectations for delivery if it is still comming from cyprus. Mine usually takes 6 to 7 days from order date. Maybe it takes a bit longer to your part of the uk, I’m 35mls south of London.
Hi Anne and Chris 🙂 Thanks for the welcome. Good to meet other people in the same frustrated position. Just placed another order today at Pharma2u so it will be interesting to see if its coming from UK now. I don’t understand why it hasn’t always came from UK as they state thay are a UK company, and I read that Meda pharmaceutical have bought all the rights to co-proxamol which again are a UK company so why would it need to be shipped from Cyprus ? The Cyprus ones don’t seem to be generic are they ? Certainly should be quicker if it was sent from UK.
Hi Andrea, well i sent for my order..9th so i guess it must be coming from Cyprus ,as i have not received my order yet…well i guess il give it another few days ,before i start to moan at them …
Hi Andrea and Anne, It will be interesting to see how quick your order arrives Andrea, i don’t believe the ones from cyprus are generic. It seems Anne you are a bit unlucky with your del times, i have had 5 orders from p2u none taking more than 7 days from order date. You might be lucky Sat morning most of mine came on a Sat.
Well i live 20 miles from Edinburgh ….perhalps it takes a little longer for them to climb them thar hills ….lol Cheers Chris &Andrea
I ordered coproxamol from Cyprus and Pakistan and both came within a week.
Hi John …you must be one of the lucky ones ….or its me i must be one of the unlucky ones ….how do you find the ones that come from Pakistan ?..
Hi Anne, I am surprised you did not receive your order on Sat, i wonder why it takes so long to reach you, perhaps Tues then. I would like to know if customs had held it, if it still came from Cyprus.
Hi Chris .somehow i think this order will come from Cyprus ..if you remember this happened before .,i think i had to wait 3 weeks …
I too have been using coprox. for many years & since the withdrawal have been prescribed it by my GP. Why can’t everyone get it this way instead of paying for it from abroad ? I’m a senior citizen so don’t have to pay for it. If people don’t insist, demand will force suppliers to stop producing it, so we’ll not be able to get it either !
Hi June ,glad to hear your doc is more sympathetic than mine ,i did try to talk to my doc about being put on a name base system …but i got [i dont do name base ]so i was given codrydomol and they made me sick …..as i was a nurse for 25 yrs ,the pain in my back and neck is the result off heavy lifting ,im in my late 40s now but have to live with the pain …as i was told ,as it was wear and tear [docs words ]so i have spent all these years helping to look after people …not that i regret it for one min,,so now when i need some help ,i cant get it …i found with coprox i could take a couple in the mornig, and still carry on with my job ,as i only take 3 per day …but doc said no can do ,so thats why i have to send away for them ,to fight the medical profession June …well you may as well hit your head of a brick wall,,,,
Hello Jane,
The MHRA who banned Coproxamol, and introduced the flawed “Named Patient” system condeming thousands to live in untreated pain, is headed by Sir Alasdair Breckenridge. Above all else he is registered with the GMC as a doctor. My personal view is that it is anathema to make a complaint about medical professionals as most give their lives to help others. However, having spent two years with experimental analgesia hospitalising me three times, and having spent the same two years trying to persuade the MHRA to sort out this mess, it is time for the GMC to sort out the MHRA.
First port of call is the referral of Mr Breckenridge to the GMC. This is not something to be engaged in lightly. So a lot of effort is being made to ensure the referral is comprehensive and thorough in order for the GMC to have something to work with.
Would you like to join me in this endeavour?
Long term goal, if the MHRA refuse to listen to reason and change their mind, then change those in charge of the MHRA.
Sorry June, typo on the last post. Very rude of me. Blame the lack of analgesia and sharp pains in back and down right leg !!!
Hi June,
I, like Anne have constantly tried in vain to get my own GP to prescribe me co-proxamol but he point blankly refuses to do ‘named patient basis’ He told me he has been told as from December 07, he has not to write ANY prescriptions for them, therefore, its certainly not for the want of trying 🙁
I even tried a now private GP in my area to write me a private prescription ( who ironically was the Dr, 15 years ago that put me on co-prox !!!) He refuses on the grounds tat its a ‘drug’ and he’s not willing to take any chances, so his words ‘absolutely no way ! ‘ :(:(:(:(
Therefore it leaves us in here no option but to buy them from abroad 🙁
Hi Anne T, Russ & Andrea, I sympathise deeply that you’ve not been able to build up a mutual trust & respect relationship with your GPs enough for him to trust you not to sue him should you have any problem from taking the drugs he prescribes for you, for that is what it boils down to ! For him to say he has been TOLD not to prescribe it for you is rubbish ! Yes, the law is wrong &, apparently 70% of GPs voted against it, but swearing & moaning is not the right way to go about changing it. Email your MP & urge him to support Anne Begg’s efforts to have a review of the decision. Also, have you read Dr. Bateman’s article in ‘behind medicalheadlines.com’? Coprox. CAN BE a very dangerous drug for SOME people & even taking 2 more than the advised dose has killed people, there’s no antidote & death is rapid – before you get to hosp. !! So, lets be realistic about it. Having said that, some 40% of hosp. admissions are said to be due to iatrogenic (drug induced) causes !! Apparently, due to this recent law, the cost of coprox. has rocketed from under £3/100 before to more than £20/100 now !! Not to mention the rip-off of folks like you who are having to get it from the internet & the dangers of such a drug now being available to potentially vulnerable people who should NOT be taking it due to their medical history or other drugs they are taking ! What a shambles !So, lobby your MP !!Change your GP !! Good luck & best wishes June-retired SRN SCM HV
Well ….thats us told…
